BRIA

Isit on the porch like I’ve grown roots. Dad, actually everyone at the ranch, leave me alone. They know I’m grieving for Tinks.

Ry rings but I don’t answer.

I don’t know where Chrys is.

As night sinks, I welcome the black. It’s a new moon tonight and I can’t see a thing. I like that. It’s like my body is as disconnected as my mind.

My brain has overloaded. Too full, too overflowing, it’s all I can feel.

The horses and their terror, for an evil I couldn’t see.

Tink’s too-wide eyes as she ran at the door. Eyes that wouldn’t even close in death, as if she was scared it was still coming for her.

Chrys saving me. Chrys shouting, the truth harsh and ruthless.

The gods want me dead.

I swallow, finding my throat seared and dry. It’s like the tears have run so hot, they’ve vaporized before they were even born.

I’ve lost. My mother’s death was for nothing. It’ll be forever recorded as an accident. The question of suicide silently underscoring it.

Because no matter what I know, I can’t go through the portal. Even if I record one of the gods slipping through, CGI graphics have done better than that. Like Chrys said, I’m limited by our own immutable laws of physics.

Light and time.

The two are interwoven. Connected.

Dictating that we can never travel faster than light. Einstein and his darned theory of relativity have proven it. A moving clock ticks more slowly than a stationary one. The faster something travels, the more massive an object gets, and the more time slows—until you finally reach the speed of light, at which point time stops all together.

So to get through the portal whole, I need to travel faster than the speed of light.

Or stop time.

And I’ve witnessed firsthand what happens when those laws are ignored. They’re why my mother died. Light and time.

I blink in the dark. It’s absolute on nights of the new moon. It’s like light has been swallowed by night.

I shoot up straight, eyes popping wide open. If I were to move away from the house, from any source of light, it’s like the world has been drowned in ink. It’s like light doesn’t exist!

I don’t need to travel faster than it. Not if there isn’t any!

I’m standing before I realize it, excitement dancing through me. Pacing, I wrap my arms around my middle, trying to keep levelheaded. The cliffs would be black right now.

Except time is still an issue. I’ve taken light out of the equation, but time is still ticking away. It probably doesn’t even work the same over in Olympus, which is why Chrys can be the brother of Pegasus, and yet look seventeen. All those times he seemed wise beyond his years is because he’s probably centuries old.

Another lie to add to the pile. From the guy sent to tell me I’m crazy, like so many others have tried.

And I didn’t falter. Didn’t get distracted. Didn’t break.

And if I can take light out of the equation, I can do the same with time.
